(Day #6) Panama Canal

Weather forecast: Very warm with high humidity

Our camera and binoculars get fogged up every time we take them out to our veranda. That just shows how warm it is outside. We started through "The Ditch" at 6:30 am and it will take about nine hours to reach the other side.

The Panama Canal, a masterpiece of engineering, is considered to be the Eighth Wonder of the Modern World. On August 15, 1914 the Panama Canal officially opened. The combined French and American out lay topped $639,000,000.00 during the 34 year construction. More than 80,000 workers assisted and 30,000 French, American, and Panamanian lives were lost. Yellow fever and other deadly diseases claimed many of those lives.

At noon we went down for a meeting about Machu Picchu. There is only thirteen of us and one guild going on this overland trip. We will be gone from January 12 - 15th. We are super excited about going.
