(Day #16) Easter Island

Going a shore this morning didn't look good at all. The waves both at the ship and at the pier where hitting about ten feet. Our captain and his crew decided to try one more place on the island. When we got there, the waves were clam but this place did not have any kind of dock. They were finally managed to get one of the tenders tie up to the shore. That tender became the dock and all the other tenders brought passengers there to get on and off the island.

Dennis was able to get us a driver and we were set to leave when another passenger hopped in too. At first we were upset that he was there. As the day when on we found out that Roy had more information of the island than the driver. Roy just wanted to be dropped off at the quarry where some of the moais were left unfinished.
The quarry wanted a $60.00 USA fee to go in. We decided there was enough to see without climbing to the quarry. Roy felt the same way. We knew that there was no way we were leaving a eighty year old man stranded out there.

Most of the roads were dirt with deep ruts. We had to laugh at the rocks laid out as speed bumps on one dirt road. Our driver gave us each a half a pineapple. It was the best pineapple I have ever tasted!!

Easter Island is the most isolated inhabited island in the world. It is owned by Chile. It got it's name "Easter" because it was discovered by the Dutch on Easter Sunday, 1722. The moai are not just heads like most people think. They are kneeing statues placed on their ahu.
