Nanortalik's population is a mere 1,550 people. (Our ship has 3,100 passengers and 1,200 crew.) The town only has two taxis and the drivers don't speak English.
Sharon had decided that she was not going into port because of the problems last time with the tenders. That morning when she opened up the drapes in our room, there was a good size iceberg sitting there.
We watched our ship lower five tenders so we were busy getting ready. About twenty minutes later the captain came on the intercom and announced that we were not going to be able to go into this port after all. The icebergs were blocking the entrance into the harbor and the ship couldn't get closer. There was not a safe place for the ship to stay because there were icebergs and rock islands all around.
The captain decided to take the ship up one of the fjords which was known for it's gold mine. We were able to stand on our balcony and watch the beautiful scenery go by. After about a hour and a half had passed the ship stopped. A tender was lowered with the ship's photographer on it. We waited about 30 minutes while the photographer took pictures. The captain said that "no other cruise ship" had ever sailed this far up the fjord.
After the tender was back on the ship, we sailed back out the the fjord and then started to our next port.
We felt like this was a better excursion than going into Nanortalik.
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." -Mark Twain
